Carpinteria splits twinbill with Pirates

Carpinteria rallied to beat Santa Ynez 8-6 with a four-run seventh on Saturday but the Pirates took the nightcap 5-4 in a baseball doubleheader at Santa Ynez.

“We’ve been doing this for 16 years and it’s one of my favorite days,” said Warrior coach Pat Cooney, of the season-opening battle between the county rivals. “I was happy with the way we played.”

Marcus Hutchinson doubled in each game for Carpinteria. He had a two-run double in the seventh inning of the opener and scored the go-ahead run on a groundout by Trevor Madden. The eighth run scored on an error.

Colton Rubio went five innings in the first game, throwing just 57 pitches while giving up five runs on seven hits.

Zach DeMarcus got the pitching win for Santa Ynez with three innings of relief in the second game. The Pirates broke a 4-4 tie in the fifth when DeMarcus singled, stole second and scored on an RBI single by Felipe Gonzalez.
