Elisabeth Bransgard won three throwing events on Friday to guide the SBCC women to victory in WSC Track & Field Meet No. 1 at Cuesta in San Luis Obispo.
Bransgard, a freshman from Sweden, took first in the hammer (37.41m; 122 feet, 9 inches), discus (42.73m/140-2) and javelin (31.39m/103-0). Her hammer and discus marks are No. 2 on SBCC’s all-time list. She was also third in the shot put (10.06m).
The women totaled 149 points to beat L.A. Valley (128) and Moorpark (125) in the six-team field. Cuesta won the men’s meet with 221 points. SBCC was fourth at 71.
Kelli Johnson broke the all-time SBCC record while winning the women’s high jump with a leap of 1.69m (5-6½). The Vaqueros went 1-2-3 in the high jump with Liza Messner second and Lorien Patmore third.
Ayla Granados won the 800m in a season-best 2:23.99.
Cal Keating topped the Vaquero men, taking first in the triple jump (12.27m), second in the long jump (6.48m) and third in the high jump (1.82m).
“It was a great team effort,” said coach Scott Fickerson. “We had some athletes really shine like Elisabeth, Kelli and Cal, but it was the 45 season-best marks that made the difference. We had many athletes working hard for lots of 2nd, 3rd, and 4th-place finishes to accumulate a lot of points.
“A few studs can’t win a track meet, it takes a whole team and we had that today. I’m really proud of our athletes.”
The Vaqueros will host the Easter Relays at La Playa Stadium on Friday, starting at 9 a.m.
