Bishop Diego’s tennis team dealt with a shortage of players in a 11-7 loss at Oak Park on Tuesday.
Although one player short due to educational reasons, Bishop Diego’s Mick Mathis and Matt Grimes stepped up big by playing their first singles matches with each coming out on top 2-1.
Typically, Mathis and Grimes are a strong doubles team for Bishop Diego, but Tuesday they proved each can play singles successfully.
“We were down a player so I had to mix up the line-up. Mick Mathis and Grimes both played great today.” said Bishop Diego coach Ray Vazquez.
Other singles scores from Bishop Diego include Sean Stratford- Jones, 2-1, who also received praise from his head coach.
“Sean has only improved. He’s playing great tennis right now.”
Bishop Diego was also forced to change up some of the doubles, playing Nick Lensander and Sergio Lopez together for the first time. The new duo ended up going 2-1, while the remaining doubles went 0-3.
“It was the first time Lenfander and Lopez played together. One of the matches they even went 7-5. They played great tennis and had great chemistry.” said Vazquez.
Bishop Diego falls to 0-2 in the Tri-Valley League. Their next game will be played at Orcutt Academy this Thursday at 3 p.m.
