The finish wasn’t kind to SBCC on Friday at par-72 California CC, where the Vaqueros placed eighth out of 10 schools in the Rio Hondo Invitational at Whittier.
Long Beach won the men’s golf tourney with 369 strokes, beating College of the Desert by six and Glendale by nine. The Vaqueros’ total was 410.
Matt Boberg led Santa Barbara’s all-freshman squad with a 76. Kyle Rieb and Dodge Ward posted 82s and Reese Hutchins shot 83. Peter Prescott of Long Beach was the medalist at 6-under 66.
“We had a lot of big holes,” said SBCC coach Chuck Melendez. “Some guys had good rounds going, then it got away at the end. We‘ve got a long way to go to close the gap and be competitive. I‘m still optimistic, we just have to find our groove.”
The Vaqueros will play in the Ventura Invitational on Wednesday at Monarch Dunes in Nipomo.
