Villanova scored a last-second layup and beat Carpinteria 43-41 in a Frontier League tiebreaker playoff game Friday night at St. Bonaventure.
The win gave Villanova the third automatic CIF playoff berth. Carpinteria petitioned for an at-large in the playoffs. With a 14-10 record, coach Johnny Ward said the team’s chances of being selected are good.
With the score tied at 41, Ward said Paul Aguilar had a good look for a game-winning shot with seven seconds left, “but he was knocked over and there was no foul.”
Villanova got the ball and scored the game-winner.
Carpinteria got off to a slow start and fell behind 25-15 at halftime. The Warriors battled back and eventually took a six-point lead in the fourth quarter.
But Villanova tightened its defense, forced turnovers, and caught Carpinteria at 41-all.
Myles Menegon had nine points, Trevor Madden eight and Tommy Arellano seven for Carpinteria.
