Carpinteria girls basketball coach Dan Mercer said it wasn’t the prettiest win, but Thursday’s 50-45 decision over visiting Grace Brethren was good enough.
“We played a scrappy team but we got the W,” he said.
It was Senior Night, and Mercer’s two upperclassmen contributed to the win. Jenny Leonard had four points and captain Mirina DeLeon grabbed five rebounds and “held us together,” said Mercer.
Juli Cullins scored 16 points and grabbed 18 rebounds to pace Carpinteria (12-12, 6-4), and Melissa Lemus played a solid game with six points, eight assists and eight steals.
Now it’s on to the CIF 4A playoffs. The Warriors qualified as the No. 3 team in the Frontier League.
