Strong third quarter propels Bishop to 2nd-round win

Bishop Diego loosened up in the third quarter and outscored California Lutheran 20-10 en route to a 53-48 victory Friday night in a CIF Division 6AA second-round boys basketball playoff game near Lake Elsinore.

“We played tight in the first half,” Bishop coach Dean Prophet said. “We had a good third quarter. The seniors came out and provided good leadership. They wanted it bad, they showed a lot of determination.”

Elias Munoz and Noah Tack each scored 12 points and Reece Moulton and Devon Poindexter added eight apiece.

Prophet said Poindexter did a good job defending against Cal Lutheran’s 6-6 post player.

“He normally scores 16 points and we held him to 13. Most of the time he caught the ball in the low post, we did a pretty good job defending.”

The Cardinals (20-7) will play their third-round game on Tuesday against either Shalhavet or Hesperia Christian.

Can someone answer why Bishop Diego is in 6AA?? Even the likes of Cate, Laguna Blanca, and Thatcher are in 5A. Did they under report enrollment or is it because they have been that bad for so many years the CIF felt sorry for them?
They need to start writing their “Thank-you” letters to the CIF for the nice gift. If they don’t win this division, then the CIF should move them to 8AA.
