Shull’s threes spark Bishop to 5A quarterfinal win

Bishop Diego players celebrate their quarterfinal win against Archer High School.

Greer Shull wasn’t going to let the seniors or the large home crowd down at Bishop Diego Wednesday in the CIF Division 5A girls basketball quarterfinal game.

Greer pumped in five 3-pointers and scored a team-high 16 points to help the Cardinals beat Archer 52-37 before a packed house at the Brick House.

The win advances Bishop Diego to the semifinals, where they’ll play second-seeded Chadwick on Saturday night at Santa Barbara High.

High scorer for the game, Greer Shull, sets up behind the arc for one of her five 3-pointers on the night. Shull scored 16 points against Archer.

“We were really pumped up tonight; we finally got a home game,” said Greer.

The Warriors were on the road in Pomona and San Bernardino for the first two rounds of the tournament.

On Wednesday, they were cheered on by a big crowd.

“That’s the most people we’ve had a game this year. The crowd really helps out a lot,” said Greer.

It definitely pumped up Greer. Down 24-23 in the third quarter, she hit back-to-back 3s to give the Cardinals the lead. Then she opened the fourth quarter with her fifth trey to start an 18-5 run that put Archer away.

“The sophomore stepped up,” Bishop coach Jeff Burich said. “The seniors felt the game was slipping away, but Greer was just as cool as can be. Her threes were big. They stopped their momentum and they gave us the lead.”

“They were playing a zone, so the three was open,” said Greer about her shooting opportunities.

Like they have throughout the playoffs, the Cardinals got balanced scoring. Kelsey Stimson scored 14 points, eight in the fourth quarter, and Courtney Houston added nine.

Allison Breuer and Karina Valencia crashed the boards for 13 and 10 rebounds, respectively. They were especially strong in the fourth quarter, Burich said. “We limited them to one shot. They were getting a lot of offensive rebounds in the first three quarters.”

Essence Thornhill and Houston spearheaded the defense effort with six and five steals, respectively.

“We all played with a lot of heart,” Greer said “We just really wanted to win.”

“The girls felt pressure because the boys won, but it’s a good kind of pressure,” said Burich.
