Carpinteria’s seniors stepped up on their special night, leading the Warriors to a 49-44 boys basketball win over Malibu on Wednesday.
“Thirteen of our 15 players are seniors, so it was good to send all 13 out with a W,” said Carpinteria coach Johnny Ward.
Eric Trujillo led a balanced attack with 12 points, nine coming in the second quarter, when the Warriors outscored Malibu 11-2 to take a 22-17 halftime lead.
“We put the clamps down defensively,” said Ward, who noted the defensive play of Johnny Jimenez.
“They had one kid who hit three 3s in the first quarter and Johnny shut that kid down. he took him out of the rest of the game.”
Myles Menegon scored 11 points, Paul Aguilar and Tommy Arellano had seven each and Trevor Madden had six blocks “and did a lot of other things for us,” said Ward.
All four players are seniors.
Carpinteria (14-10, 5-5) tied for third place with Villanova. The teams are expected to play a tiebreaker playoff game to determined the automatic CIF bid.
