Four local prep athletes competed at the Run for the Dream Indoor Track & Field Invitational this weekend, with Nick Scarvelis and Hannah McDaniel winning their respective events.
Scarvelis topped the field in the boys shotput while McDaniel placed first in the girls high jump. Nick Scarvelis is a senior at Dos Pueblos and McDaniel is a senior at San Marcos.
Bryan Fernandez and Stamatia Scarvelis – both underclassmen – also competed, with Fernandez recording a fourth in the mile and Scarvelis third in the girls shotput. Fernandez, a sophomore, and Stamatia Scarvelis, a freshman, both attend Dos Pueblos.
The athletes qualified for the statewide event in Fresno at regional qualifiers earlier in the year.
Nick Scarvelis won with a throw of 63 feet, 4.5 inches, which was more than three feet better than second-place finisher Stephen Boals.
McDaniel cleared 5 feet, 4 inches in the high jump before her first miss at 5’6″. McDaniel took the title over other seniors Tess Rountree of Paso Robles and Orange Lutheran’s Annie Giebelhaus.
Stamatia Scarvelis was the only non-senior in the top-four of the girls shotput with a heave of nearly 41 feet.
In the boys mile, Fernandez was the only non-senior in the top-eight. His time of 4:32.70 was slightly off the pace of top-finisher Justin Villhauer. The Redwood High senior clocked in at 4:23.12.
