Kyle Rieb fired a 1-over 73 on Monday and teammate Reese Hutchins shot 74, leading the SBCC men’s golf team to a fourth-place finish in WSC No. 2 at Alisal Ranch in Solvang.
Canyons won the seven-team meet with 362 strokes (72.4 average). Hancock prevailed in a card-off for second after tying Glendale at 375. Santa Barbara was fourth with a season-low 381.
Rieb, a freshman from San Marcos High, placed fifth with a season-low 73. It was also a season-best 74 for Hutchins. Matt Boberg turned in a 75 and Dodge Ward 79, giving the Vaqueros four players in the 70s. Aaron West and Derek Larson, both of Canyons, were the medalists at 3-under 69.
“It was nice to see us shoot our lowest score this year (in their home meet),” said SBCC coach Chuck Melendez. “I was very pleased. I didn’t want our guys to get comfortable in the cellar. We took a few steps out today.”
Canyons tops the WSC standings at 12-0, four games ahead of Hancock (8-4). The Vaqueros are sixth at 3-9.
SBCC returns to action on Monday in WSC No. 3 at Saticoy CC in Somis.
