SBCC struggled in the first Western State Conference men’s golf meet on Monday, shooting 407 and finishing last in the seven-team field at Valencia Country Club.
Canyons, which hosted the event, shot 10-over-par 370 and beat runner-up Bakersfield by 11 strokes. Rufie Fessler of Bakersfield was the medalist at 4-under 68.
Dodge Ward, a freshman from San Marcos High, led the Vaqueros with a 76 and Jeff Lester shot 79.
“The league is definitely strong this year,“ said coach Chuck Melendez. “Obviously we need to play better by getting more consistent and correcting our mistakes.”
The Vaqueros will play in the Rio Hondo Invitational on Friday at California CC in Whittier.
