Grossmont took a 4-2 lead in singles on Friday afternoon and went on to defeat SBCC 6-3 in a women’s tennis match in El Cajon.
Amy Sagraves and Meike van Hoogenhuijze posted singles wins for the Vaqueros (1-1), who were playing their second match in two days. Betsy Sauer and Kendra Ross got the other point with an 8-2 win in No. 2 doubles. Grossmont (1-0) has won 11 state titles, most recently in 2008.
Sauer, SBCC’s No. 1 player, dropped a close 7-5, 6-4 decision in singles.
“It was a hard-fought match at No. 1,” said coach Debbie Ekola. “Kendra won her first set (at No. 6 singles) and really fought hard. The outcome came down to a couple of close matches.”
Nicci Yvanovich and Anna Slyutova lost a narrow 8-6 set at No. 3 doubles.
SBCC will meet Sequoias in its home opener on Friday, Feb. 11, at 2 p.m.
