Who put a lid on the basket?
San Marcos was probably asking that question after shot after shot in the second half failed to fall through the hoop, allowing visiting Buena to storm back from a 22-point deficit and beat the Royals 50-48 in a Channel League basketball game Friday night at the Thunderhut.
The Royals were on fire in the first half, making their first seven shots and bolting to a 17-1 lead in the first quarter. The advantage got up to 22 by halftime.
But it all came undone in the second half. The shots stopped falling and the turnovers started mounting for the Royals. They committed 17 turnovers and Buena took full advantage.
The Bulldogs chipped away and tied the game at 48-48 with a minute left. They would take the lead with 5.4 seconds remaining on a basket by Connor McGuire.
The loss dropped San Marcos to 5-6 in Channel League (16-9 overall). Buena is firmly in second place in the league at 9-4.
Christian Mkpado scored 19 points and Kevin Vasquez had 14 for the Royals.
