Rams’ victory means Condor League title outright

Cate’s girls soccer team clinched the Condor League title outright on Saturday, fending off a determined Laguna Blanca side 3-1 on the Mesa.

Brennan Cusack scored the game’s first goal off a pass from Mabel Sabina in the 35th minute, giving Cate a 1-0 halftime lead. Cusack continued on to score all three goals for Cate.

“From the beginning this game had an intensity and pace that we had not experienced in previous games,” wrote Rams head coach Lisa Holmes in an email. “The 1-0 half-time lead was by no means a comfortable one.”

Cusack’s second gave the Rams a 2-0 lead 15 minutes into the second half. Emily Nguyen assisted.

Laguna brought it back to 2-1 just two minutes later after testing Cate goalie Grace Gail several times already in the half.

Cusack completed the hat trick a few minutes before the final whistle.

Cate has one regular season game remaining before begining CIF playoffs as the Condor League’s No. 1 team. The Owls face Dunn on Wednesday before preparing for the postseason.
