Chad Lampe of Dos Pueblos and Santa Barbara’s Bryce Vinion survived a tough weekend of wrestling and qualified for the CIF Masters Meet.
Vinion finished fourth at 189 pounds and Lampe took fifth at 112 at the CIF Individual Championships Inland Division meet at Roosevelt-Corona.
The top five wrestlers advanced to the Masters, the final qualifier for the State Meet.
Lampe, a sophomore, won a rematch against Warren’s Bryan Orozco to earn the fifth spot. He lost 2-0 to Orozco in the quarterfinals but came back to win the fifth-place match 8-2.
“I’m happy for Chad, he’s been working really hard,” said DP coach Anthony Califano. “Chad’s got as good a chance as anybody to get through to the State Meet.”
Lampe’s qualification continued Califano’s streak of sending a wrestler to the Masters.
“In my coaching career, I’ve had a kid got to Masters every year,” said Califano.
Vinion, a junior and the top seed in the 189-pound division, lost 6-2 to Raymond Sanchez of A.B. Miller in the third-place match.
Dos Pueblos had four wrestlers come within one place of qualifying for the Masters.
In one of the toughest setbacks, 119-pounder Nico Sorenson suffered a heartbreaking 7-6 decision in a third-place semifinal against Victor Hernandez of Warren.
Harrison Solomon, DP’s Hebrew Hammer, had his State Meet aspirations derailed by a knee injury. He still competed and was eliminated by pin against Ryan Medina of Warren.
“He tore his meniscus a couple of weeks ago and I think it took a little wind out of his sails,” Califano said. “I’m a little disappointed for Harrison to not go through. He made his mark, that’s for sure. His effort on and off the mat was incredible. His leadership is second to none. He’s one of the best leaders I’ve ever had.”
