Monica Jackson tossed in a 3-point shot from just inside halfcourt to beat the buzzer Saturday night and lift L.A. Pierce to an 83-82 women’s basketball win over SBCC.
Jackson, the leading scorer in the WSC at 27.3 per game, scored 25 of her 36 points in the first half when the Brahmas (16-9, 6-3) took a 46-38 lead. Jackson also had 12 turnovers in the game, thanks to the defense of Imelda Bealer.
Freshman Mercedes Gonzalez tied her career high with 16 points and had a season-best 11 rebounds for the Vaqueros (17-9, 4-4), who erased a 12-point deficit with three minutes to play. Lyndsay Bergus hit 3-6 from 3-point range and added 13 points while Janelle Wong had 12.
Bergus hit back-to-back triples to give the Vaqueros an 82-80 lead with 45 seconds to play. Nanice Kollee was fouled with five seconds left but missed both free throws.
Bealer, a 5-6 sophomore guard, had an amazing game with nine points, nine rebounds, eight assists, seven blocked shots and five steals. For good measure, she also took two charges.
“We competed every possession and you can’t be upset with a loss like this,” said coach Sandrine Krul. “Monica Jackson just made a great shot.”
SBCC travels to first-place Ventura on Wednesday for a 7 p.m. game.
