Gauchos top Marist after slip-up

SAN DIEGO – – On day one of the Triton Invitational, No. 12 UC Santa Barbara (7-4) went scoreless in the second half against Long Beach State (1-4) and lost, 5-2, but rebounded strongly against No. 20 Marist (0-2), 12-3 later in the day. Both were non-conference games.

In game number four of the tournament the Gauchos faced Long Beach State, who was previously winless (0-3) and unranked on the season.

The 49ers came out firing on all cylinders and seemed to take UCSB by surprise. The game was tied after the first period, 1-1, but at halftime the 49ers had a one goal lead, 3-2.

It was two seniors recording goals for the Gauchos as Christie Clark and Claire Buchanan both netted goals in the game.

Yet the Gauchos could not post a goal in the second half and fell 5-2 to the 49ers.

Later in the day the Gauchos would get a chance to rebound against Marist University.

The Gauchos defense recorded a shut out in the first and second period, and the offense scored seven goals. The 7-0 lead was insurmountable and even though the Red Foxes matched each Gaucho Goal in the third period, UCSB pulled away once again in the fourth notching three goals to the Red Foxes one. The Gauchos easily took the win, 12-3.

Clark had a game-high three goals in the game and scored a team-high four goals for the day.

Kacey Creek and Elle Quann both netted two goals for the Gauchos.

Leading the defense was goalkeeper Chelsea Carrillo, who recorded 12 saves against the Red Foxes.

Molly Hafferkamp, Kristin Kulakowski, Selina Rivera, Michelle Beaudreau and Kilee Dreyer also scored for UCSB, each earning one goal a piece.

The Gauchos improved to 7-4 on the season after the win, and will play two more games on Sunday to finish off the tournament. UCSB will start off tomorrow against Cal State East Bay at noon. The Gauchos have already defeated the Pioneers this season, earning a 14-9 victory back on Jan. 21.

Game two for the Gauchos will depend on whether they win or lose against the Pioneers at noon.
