Carpinteria’s girls water polo team shut down Cate on Wednesday, pinning a 9-2 Tri-Valley League win on the Rams.
Carpinteria took a 5-1 lead at halftime and limited Cate’s offensive opportunities throughout the game.
“That’s what we really needed. We came in here knowing we had to get really pumped. The whole day we’ve been working on it,” said Carter Grant, who led the Warriors with four goals. “We came out really strong and that’s what we wanted.”
Roxanne Hugo and Hope Grant added two goals each for Carpinteria while Kate Montgomery scored both goals for Cate.
“We’re looking for an offensive identity still,” said Cate head coach Nathan Alldredge.
The Rams did take plenty of outside shots and Tatiana Verdugo was busy making nine saves. The Rams also hit the crossbar on more than one occasion.
It was the second time this season Carpinteria has beaten Cate. The first meeting was an 11-4 decision.
“Of course it’s important to win every game but this one’s really special because it’s a crosstown thing,” Carter said.
Carpinteria, at 6-1 in league play, is in good position to take second place behind Malibu with three games to play in the regular season. Cate is in contention for third place with a 4-5 record. The Rams’ only remaining game is next Wednesday against Oaks Christian, who Cate beat the first time around.
“I’m really happy that we’re doing so well this year,” Grant said.
