Bishop Diego turned its CIF Division 5A second-round girls basketball playoff game into a track meet Saturday, as the Cardinals blew past Aquinas 71-37 in San Bernardino.
Essence Thornhill had a huge game with 14 points and 14 steals, leading five Cardinals in double-figure scoring. Kelsey Stimon scored 13 points, Allison Breuer had 11 points and 13 rebounds, Greer Shull tallied 10 points, and Courtney Houston joined Thornhill and Breuer with a double-double, scoring 10 points and making 11 steals.
“We pressed and we ran,” Bishop coach Jeff Burich said. “That team was out of gas by halftime.”
The Cardinals’ high pressure never allowed Aquinas to find a rhythm on offense.

“It worked out for us. We rarely ran our offense. It was just attacking the basket.”
After back-to-back road games, Bishop Diego (15-14) will be home for a quarterfinal game on Wednesday night. The Cardinals will play either West Valley Christian or Archer.
