For Santa Barbara High’s Bryce Vinion and Lacey Gonzalez of Providence Hall, there was special significance behind their Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table Athlete of the Week awards.
Besides turning in outstanding performances, Vinion and Gonzalez made history for their schools. Vinion became the first Santa Barbara wrestler in several years to win an individual Channel League championship, capturing the 191-pound weight class at the league finals on Saturday.
Gonzalez will forever be known at Providence Hall as the school’s first female athlete of the week winner.
Gonzalez, the Lions’ point guard, went on a scoring rampage last week, scoring 28 points in a win over Laguna Blanca, 22 in an overtime victory over North County Christian and 19 points in a tough 46-43 loss to Thacher.
Vinion made his school and his coach, Jesse Plowman, proud with his league title. The junior scored five unanswered points in the third period against Lucas Rascon of Dos Pueblos and powered to an 8-3 victory. His victory sends him to the CIF divisional championships on Feb. 19.
