SBCC opened its men’s volleyball season with a ninth-place finish at the 12-team Long Beach Invitational.
The Vaqueros went 0-3 in pool play, then defeated Hope International 25-23 in the first round of the consolation playoffs. In the semifinals, they led L.A. Pierce 24-21 before dropping a 28-26 decision.
Logan Wais had 41 kills and hit .329 in 10 sets. Middle blocker Cody Zoesch had 25 kills and a .581 hitting percentage while Kyle Benskin collected 17 kills and hit .485.
Long Beach won the 12-team tournament, beating Orange Coast in the final, 25-22.
The Vaqueros will take on Grossmont and San Diego Mesa on Saturday at Palomar College.
