Vaquero beaten up on the boards against Moorpark

Moorpark dominated the boards and took advantage of 37-percent shooting by SBCC to defeat the Vaqueros 71-59 on Saturday night at the Sports Pavilion.

Coltrane Powdrill had 20 points and 10 rebounds for the Raiders (8-13, 3-4 WSC North), who took a 37-34 lead at the half and never trailed in the final 20 minutes.

Moorpark won the board battle 49-22, including a 19-8 advantage at the offensive end.

“That was the difference in the ball game,” said SBCC coach Morris Hodges. “They had 12 offensive rebounds at halftime. They were clearly more aggressive and we didn’t do a good job of boxing out.”

Sophomore Chris Vines led the Vaqueros (7-15, 3-4) with 23 points (on 7-10 shooting) and seven rebounds. Jared Green hit 4-of-6 on his way to a season-high 11 points off the bench.

The Vaqueros trimmed an eight-point deficit to 53-49 on a left-handed layin by Green with 7:25 to play. The Raiders responded with a 13-4 run that boosted the lead to 66-53 with 3:44 to play.

Santa Barbara made just 1-10 from 3-point country in the first half and 1-8 in the second.

After a bye on Wednesday, the Vaqueros will travel to L.A. Pierce on Saturday.
