Brandon Velazquez moved up a weight class and battled back from an early deficit to win his match at 160 pounds and help Dos Pueblos defeat Buena 39-21 in a Channel League wrestling dual meet on Tuesday night at DP.
Velazquez, who normally wrestles at 152, was down 2-0 after the first period against 160-pounder Quinn Summitt.
DP coach Anthony Califano said Summitt chose to take the down position to start the second period and “Brandon rode him out and turned him right at the end of the period to take a 4-2 lead.”
He held on in the final period to give the Chargers a stirring victory.
Velazquez was one of seven seniors to post victories.
Brian Dominguez registered DP’s only pin of the night, beating Freddie Leon at 3:30 of their 152-pound bout.
The Chargers did have three shutout wins by Alejandro Gonzalez, Richard Stevens and Rudy Cortes.
“I was worried,” Califano said about facing Buena. “Last year it came down to the last match to win the dual. This time, we ended up winning a lot of close matches. Our seniors came through. Harrison Solomon, Danny Ly, Alejandro Gonzalez, Richard Stevens, Dominguez, Velasquez, Lucas Rascon, the seniors led the way for us.”
DP’s next match is a week from Thursday at home against perennial league champion Ventura.
