San Marcos played a smothering defense and shut down Ventura 10-3 in a Channel League girls water polo match on Tuesday.
The Royals shut out the Cougars in the first two periods, taking a 6-0 lead at halftime.
“We were defending really well,” San Marcos coach Chuckie Roth said. “We played as a team offensively. I am quite pleased with our performance.”
Brittny Hummel led the defensive effort, holding Ventura’s top player to just two goals. Rose and Hannah Koper blanked the players they matched up against.
Goalie Alex Brown made six saves and had five steals.
At the offensive end Hummel scored three goals and Hannah and Rose Koper each tallied a pair. Ashley Wagner chipped in one and Angie Connor scored her first goal as a varsity player.
San Marcos (8-5, 2-2) returns to action Thursday against Montebello, the No. 2-ranked team in CIF Division. The game will be played at 6 p.m. at Santa Barbara High.
