Santa Barbara got its offense going and beat crosstown rival San Marcos 3-1 in a Channel League game at Valley Stadium on Tuesday.
Freshman Jackie Lopez broke a scoreless game just before halftime, placing a shot into the far corner from 12 yards after a corner kick and a flick at the back post.
Jillian McIntyre made it 2-0 in the 60th minute off a flick from Krista Jimenez.
San Marcos ended a scoring drought in the 65th minute when Kailyn Koopmans hit a long ball into the box that was misplayed by the Dons defense and bounced into the net.
“We’ll take it,” San Marcos coach Lloyd Biggs said. “That got us back in the game.”
The Dons (3-9-2, 3-3) secured the win on a goal by Katie Joseff in the 70th minute.
“It was good for us to have a good offensive performance,” Santa Barbara coach Brian Lloyd said. “It was definitely positive for our team come in here and get that result.”
Biggs was impressed with how the Dons played.
“Santa Barbara played well tonight,” Biggs said. “They passed the ball, moved well and their technique was good.
“We played hard, but we’re struggling in the attacking third,” he added. “We have a lot of bodies behind the ball, so it’s hard to push numbers forward. We’re working for each other and giving every team we play a good game.”
