Bishop Diego’s girls basketball team moved up to the Tri-Valley League this season and happened to draw the league’s best team for its season opener.
The result was a 64-24 defeat to Oaks Christian on Thursday, as the Lions were too quick and athletic for the Cardinals.
“We had a bad shooting night and their pressure hurt us,” said Cardinals head coach Jeff Burich. “They put us in a hurry-up mode and we couldn’t settle down.”
Essence Thornhill and Kelsey Stimson were bright spots for Bishop.
“Those two kids did a really good job of attacking the basket,” Burich said.
Thornhill led the team in scoring with nine while Stimson scored six points and pulled down five rebounds.
Bishop (9-6, 0-1) can even its league record on Saturday in a game with Nordhoff.
