The No. 12 UCSB women’s water polo team split two games on the opening day of the UCSB Winter Invite.
The Gauchos (5-2) dealt visiting No. 20 Cal State Bakersfield (1-3) a 10-5 loss before falling later in the day to No. 11 San Diego State 13-9.
UCSB erupted for six goals in the second quarter against Bakersfield.
Kathryn Nelson, Christie Clark and Shelby Haroldson each scored two goals for the Gauchos. Goalie Ruth Milne made 12 saves.
UCSB and San Diego State were in a tight game until the Aztecs recorded three unanswered goals to jump out to an 11-6 advantage. The Gauchos got three goals in the fourth, but it wasn’t enough.
Christie Clark and Shelby Haroldson each scored two goals for the Gauchos.
The Gauchos conclude action at the UCSB Winter Invite on Sunday with a game against UC San Diego at 11:30 a.m. and UC Irvine at 3 p.m. at Campus Pool.
