Bishop Diego’s girls soccer team was back in the mix on Thursday, playing it first match in nearly three weeks. The Cardinals did well for themselves in the New Year, recording a 5-0 victory at Orcutt Academy.
“We were very rusty today,” said Bishop head coach Brent Gonsalves. “Coming away 5-0 is a very good score for being so rusty.”
The Cardinals took a 2-0 lead by halftime on the strength of goals from Jordan Price and Natalie Durtche. In the second half, Hannah Brand, Annelise Mirando and Allison Carr kept the scoring going. Brand and Jessica Brosnan recorded assists in the game.
On the defensive side, Kim Ruiz posted the shutout in goal for Bishop and sophomore Amanda Garcia drew praise from her coach.
“(Garcia) played great,” Gonsalves said. “She was actually one of the highlights for me because she was so relentless.”
Bishop Diego, which improved to 4-3-2 on the season, plays again on Saturday at 11 a.m. hosting Channel Islands.
