Bishop Diego freshman Jessica Brosnan backed up her new varsity teammates on Saturday by recording her team’s only goal in a 1-0 victory over visiting Channel Islands.
It was only Brosnan’s second game at the varsity level, both wins for Bishop. Brosnan scored in the third minute on Saturday, heading in a cross from Natalie Durtche.
Cardinals head coach Brent Gonsalves liked to see his team make the one goal stand up.
“I did explain to the girls that we are ahead and I wanted them to dig in a little more and not rush the game,” Gonsalves said. “I didn’t want to play an open style of game from there on.”
Goalkeeper Kim Ruiz preserved the shutout with four saves as the Raiders attacked for the equalizer.
“Our goalkeeper was on fire today,” Gonsalves said. “She made four saves but they were really critical saves.”
Gonsalves also noted the defensive work from Katriana Reddington and Brooke Gignac in the middle of the field.
Bishop Diego (5-3-2) begins its league season on Tuesday at home against rival Carpinteria. Kick off is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
