SBCC’s full-court press flattens Imperial Valley

After a slow start on Friday, SBCC put on its full-court press and that was lights out for Imperial Valley in a 74-58 women’s basketball victory in the first round of the Moorpark Tournament.

The Vaqueros (9-4), ranked 18th in the state, forced 38 turnovers on the way to their fifth win in six games. They advanced to Saturday’s 4 p.m. semifinal against L.A. Valley, a team they beat by 20 points last Sunday.

SBCC had five players score between 11 and 13 points, led by Lyndsay Bergus with 13 points and six rebounds. She scored all her points in the first half when the Vaqueros caused 23 turnovers and built a 37-22 lead.

Leslie Steele hit four 3-pointers in the second half for her 12 points, Brooke Amenta had 12 points and 11 rebounds and Mercedes Gonzalez added 12 points and eight boards.

Janelle Wong had 11 points and Imelda Bealer had her usual all-around game with seven rebounds, six assists and three steals. Brooke Berry had six of her team’s 22 steals.

“We have 14 players and anyone can step in and get the job done,” said coach Sandrine Krul. “I love this team because they all believe in our system.”
