Carpinteria fell under a barrage of 3-point baskets by Santa Ynez and dropped a 57-53 decision to the Pirates at the Valley Christian Academy boys basketball tournament on Wednesday.
“In the second half, they hit a lot of three-pointers,” Carpinteria coach Johnny Ward said. “They scored 38 points and we played defense with our hands down.”
The Warriors were ahead 26-19 before the Pirates dropped five 3-pointers in the third quarter and scored 23 points.
“We just did not play good defense in the third quarter,” said Ward.
Carpinteria pulled to within one point (53-52) and had the ball when it was called for traveling an inbounds play with 20 seconds left.
“That big call completely changed the game,” said Ward.
Eric Trujillo scored 12 points, Trevor Madden added 11 and Miles Menegon eight for Carpinteria.
Zack Foss scored 15 and Conner Reck 14 for Santa Ynez.
