Bakersfield took advantage of SBCC’s poor shooting and 20 turnovers to post an 83-61 men’s basketball victory on Tuesday in the first round of the Hancock Tournament in Santa Maria.
The Vaqueros (3-10) were playing their first game in 18 days. They made just 29.6 from the field (21-71) and 44 percent from the free-throw line (12-27) in their fourth straight loss. Bakersfield, which led 36-27 at the half, shot 54 percent overall.
Richard Somdah topped Santa Barbara with 18 points and eight rebounds. Chris Vines had 10 points, nine boards and three steals while Anthony Petrilli chipped in with 11 points and three steals. Tony Hawley grabbed eight rebounds.
“We were down six in the first half, then we made a lot of critical turnovers,” said coach Morris Hodges. “We also missed a number of easy shots.”
SBCC will play Rio Hondo or Hancock in a consolation semifinal on Wednesday at 3 p.m.
