San Marcos shook off a sloppy first half and played some good basketball to beat Santa Paula 41-25 in a first-round game at the Fillmore Tournament on Wednesday.
“In the second half, we got the first game jitters out of the way,” said San Marcos girls coach Kristyn Miller. The Royals led 15-13 at halftime.
“We have only three returning varsity players, so we’re an inexperienced team,” Miller said. “In the second half, we warmed up. Offensively, we got to the free-throw line and defensively we made adjustments to take away as many opportunities as we could.”
Gabby Sandoval scored nine points and freshman Taylor Escobar added eight in her varsity debut.
The Royals play Fillmore on Friday.
