San Marcos couldn’t get to the free-throw line and had trouble holding on to the basketball in the second quarter of a 36-30 loss to Santa Ynez in the Gold Coast Tournament on Wednesday.
“We had only seven attempts at the free-throw line,” San Marcos coach Kristyn Miller said.
The Royals were down 8-6 after the first quarter and then things went bad.
“They’re taller than we are and they got their hands on a lot of our passes,” said Miller.
As a result, the Pirates outscored San Marcos 13-5 and opened up a 21-11 lead by halftime.
The Royals played better in the second half, but they couldn’t overcome that bad second quarter.
Desiree Porter-Ray led the Royals with 11 points and Emily Dietz added nine.
San Marcos plays Channel Islands at 5:30 on Thursday.
