Overtime loss doesn’t spoil Royals’ day

San Marcos’ girls water polo team closed out the Villa Park Tournament on Saturday, coming up just short of winning both games on the tourney’s final day.

The Royals took care of Rosary 12-7 in their early game before falling to Dana Hills 7-6 in overtime.

“It was a great game though, we played really well,” said Royals head coach Chuckie Roth, whose team went 3-2 in the tournament and is 3-3 overall.

Against Dana Hills, the Royals erased a one-goal deficit in the fourth quarter to force overtime. Both teams held the other scoreless in the first overtime period before Dana Hills outscored San Marcos 2-1 in the second for the win.

Rose Koper and Brittny Hummel each scored six goals on the day. Hannah Koper recorded three goals in the two games while Halie Johnson scored twice in the first game.

But it was goalkeeper Alex Brown who impressed her coach the most.

Brown saved 13 shots and collected three steals against Dana Hills, leading a strong defensive effort from the Royals in their second game of the day.

San Marcos returns to Channel League play on Tuesday at Dos Pueblos.
