Vicente Perez assisted on two highlight-reel goals to lead third-ranked Dos Pueblos to a 2-1 win over Newbury Park to remain undefeated in boys soccer.
Kyle Schmechel timed his run perfectly, met a cross from Vicente Perez and powered a header from 18 yards into the back of the net for a 1-0 lead in the 30th minute.
Newbury Park tied the score on a penalty kick in the 38th minute.
The game-winner for DP came in the 58th minute. Ivan Luna took a through ball from Perez on the right flank, attacked the near post, beat a defender and beat the goalkeeper with a shot to the far post
“It was a great goal and a great pass from Vicente,” said DP coach Tovi Eliasen.
On the first goal, Perez intercepted the ball on the right flank before delivering the cross.
“We needed that first one to feel comfortable,” Eliasen said. “It was a wonderful cross by Vicente, who had his third and fourth assists.
The Chargers (6-0-1) outshot the Panthers 16-3.
Eliasen praised the play of midfielders Jonathan Fisher and Schmechel.
“They really worked well together,” he said. “They’re growing with each other with each game. When they have a good day, it will be difficult to beat us. They’re intelligent players.”
Eliasen also lauded Irving Beltran, who filled in for injured Danny Rowell in the midfield.
The Chargers will next play in the Soccer Town High School Showcase on Friday and Saturday. They open against Bellflower.
