Hancock kicks down SBCC’s door

SBCC used a 7-1 run to take a 75-71 lead with 2:17 remaining in a consolation semifinal of its own men’s basketball tournament on Friday, then went cold down the stretch in a 77-75 loss to county rival Hancock.

Jordan O’Byrne put the Bulldogs ahead 76-75 with a 3-pointer at the 1:03 mark. Steven Saenz was stripped of the ball with 28.6 seconds left and it went out of bounds to Hancock.

Jordan Dina made the second of two free throws to make it 77-75. SBCC’s Richard Somdah was fouled with 15.4 seconds to go but missed both free throws. Santa Barbara hit just 11-21 from the charity stripe while Hancock was 22-28.

SBCC freshman Anthony Petrilli grabbed the rebound and following a timeout with 5.6 seconds to go, the ball was knocked off a Vaquero out-of-bounds. Hancock couldn’t in-bound in five seconds and the ball went back to SBCC with 2.8 seconds showing but Saenz’s 27-foot try bounced off the rim as time expired.

Ali Langford had 23 points and 12 rebounds for Hancock (1-7), which got its first win of the season. Chris Vines scored 17 points on 7-11 shooting and Somdah had 16, including a perfect 3-3 on 3-pointers, for the Vaqueros (3-9), who dropped their third straight and were eliminated from the 38th annual SBCC Classic.

SBCC shot 51 percent but was outrebounded 40-24. Petrilli, Tony Hawley and Eric Becker contributed 10 points apiece and Petrilli had four assists.

The Vaqueros overcame a 36-29 halftime deficit by opening the second half on an 18-6 run. A 3-pointer by Vines and a follow shot by Becker gave Santa Barbara a 47-42 lead with 14:42 to play.

“They had 17 offensive rebounds and that was the difference in the game,” said coach Morris Hodges. “It’s disappointing and frustrating when you lose a one-possession game. We talk about how any play can make a difference, they’re just magnified at the end.”

Cypress and Oxnard advanced to Saturday’s championship at 7 p.m. The Chargers (7-3) defeated West L.A. 83-75 and the Condors (5-4) routed L.A. Valley 103-71.
Barstow edged Victor Valley 72-70 in Friday’s first game and the Vikings (8-2) will take on Hancock in Saturday’s consolation final at 3 p.m. West L.A. and L.A. Valley will tangle in the third-place game at 5 p.m.
