Brandon Gonzalez has brought his hard-running style from the football field to the soccer pitch for Bishop Diego, and the Cardinals couldn’t be happier.
Gonzalez scored two goals and freshman Robbie Landeros had two assists to help the Cardinals beat Kilpatrick 2-0 in a non-league match at Bishop.
Gonzalez gave Bishop a 1-0 lead off a Landeros assist in the first half. Sophomore forward Justin Brosnan scored off an Aaron Rubio assist for a 2-0 lead.
The Gonzalez-Landeros combination worked for a third goal in the second half.
“Brandon Gonzalez’ tireless work rate continues to show signs of trouble for opposing defenders,” Bishop coach Jesus Landeros said. “Today, he put in two goals in the net himself. Yesterday, he drew the defensive marks that created space for the Cardinal attack.”
Landeros praised the midfield play of senior co-captain Michael Morando, Robbie Landeros and Rubio.
“We really like the potential to improve this group by the time we start league in January,” said coach Landeros. “Our football players are going to get better and better in the coming weeks. They will complement our more experienced soccer guys nicely. Coach Matt Winecki has done a great job training the team as usual.”
Bishop (2-0) plays at Thacher on Saturday.
