Johnny Manzo made 6-of-6 from the free-throw line to help spark a fourth-quarter surge that carried San Marcos to a 62-52 boys basketball win over Clovis North at the San Luis Obispo Tournament.
With the score 42-41 after three quarters, the Royals outscored the Broncos 22-11 in the final quarter.
Christian Mkpado led the Royals with 19 points, making 9 of 11 from the field. Thayer White shot 6-8 and scored 14 points with 10 rebounds and three assists.
Manzo played a solid game with 10 points, seven rebounds, five assists and four steals.
Chad Ridenour hit two long-distance 3-pointers to fuel the Royals perimeter attack.
“This was an absolute team effort in the second half,” San Marcos coach Jarrod Bradley said. “Thayer and Christian were unstoppable for the second straight game and Chad was spectacular in the fourth with two threes from just outside of Pismo it seemed. Then late in the fourth Johnny hammered the last nail in
the coffin with 6-6 from the line.”
The Royals later lost to defending CIF champion Foothill 45-36.
Mkpado scored 15 points and had eight rebounds while Kevin Vasquez
shot 4-5 from 3-point range for 12 points.
San Marcos falls to 3-1 while Foothill improves to 3-0. The Knights are ranked third in Orange County.
