Jay Larinan hit a 3-pointer to send the game into overtime, but the Dos Pueblos boys basketball team couldn’t carry the momentum into the extra period and lost a 70-65 Channel League decision to visiting Ventura on Friday night.
“We turned the ball over a couple of times and (Dylan) Houck hit a couple of big shots,” DP coach Joe Zamora said of the overtime.
The Cougars (9-1, 1-0) also made 4-of-4 free throws in overtime.
It was an exciting game, with DP running out to leads and Ventura fighting back. The Cougars outscored the Chargers 27-14 in the fourth quarter.
“It was a good learning experience for our young group,” Zamora said. “You can’t let a team like Ventura stick around like that. It was a good experience for the next time we play them.”
The Chargers were hurt by 23 turnovers.
Larinan led DP in scoring with 24 points and Robert Cid tallied 22 points.
Houck paced Ventura with 23 points, while Jon McMurry added 16 points and Jared Wilson 14.
DP (3-4, 0-1) plays at Lakewood on Tuesday.
