It’s been an up-and-down season so far for the Santa Barbara High boys soccer team.
After a dominating performance on Tuesday against Buena, in which they scored five goals, the Dons struggled with their finishing on Thursday in a 1-1 non-league tie at Santa Ynez.
“It’s been the story of our season,” Santa Barbara coach Todd Heil said. “We outshot them 15-4. It’s the same old thing. We continue to outshoot teams and outpossess teams, and we’re keeping teams in games. This game is a result of that.”
T.J. Fairchild gave Santa Barbara a 1-0 lead in the 37th minute off an assist from Kane Nania.
Santa Ynez scored the equalizer in the 58th minute off a free kick. The Dons were unable to clear the ball in the box and the Pirates got the goal.
Santa Barbara (2-3-2) continued to control play but couldn’t find a finishing touch.
“We’re just not mature in front of the goal,” Heil said. “We’re getting quality chances, we’re just not mature in front of the goal.”
The Dons return to action Tuesday at the South Torrance Tournament, where they are the defending champions.
