Bishop Diego’s Johnny Diaz scored 11 of his 13 points in the second half on Saturday, leading the Cardinals to a 57-53 win over Nordhoff on the second day of the Jim Bashore Classic at Carpinteria High.
“We didn’t come out very strong in the beginning of the game and we knew we had to come out in the second half and we had to make some shots,” Diaz said.
Diaz warmed up by knocking down two jump shots at the end of the third quarter and went on to score six of the Cardinals’ 10 points in the final period. Ben Kwock’s nice reverse layup late in the fourth quarter kept Bishop in front.
Nordhoff was stronger out of the gates, taking an 18-11 lead after the first quarter.
But Elias Muñoz, who led all scorers with 19 points, took over in the second quarter. Muñoz poured in 13 points, helping Bishop pull even 35-35 at halftime.
“We lost the last game, and we were pretty mad about that, so we pushed ourselves this game,” Muñoz said.
Nordhoff was led in scoring by Brad Sloan’s 13. Jake Logsdon and Sean Battleu also reached double digits for the Rangers with 11 each.
Noah Tack added 10 points for Bishop.
Bishop Diego, which lost to Fillmore on Friday, plays Santa Ynez on Monday in the final game of pool play. Nordhoff faces Hueneme. (Tournament Schedule)
