Chargers challenged for once, champions nonetheless

Dos Pueblos repeated as Holiday Cup champions on Friday, taking the title over Corona del Mar with a 9-7 victory in the championship match to finish off an undefeated calendar year.

The Chargers found themselves down at halftime for the first time this season in the championship game but responded by scoring six of the first seven goals in the second half. A 3-5 deficit was a 9-6 lead by the middle of the fourth quarter.

“That was a little gut-check for the girls,” said DP head coach Chris Parrish. “We improved our defense a little bit and our transition led to good position on offense.”

Kiley Neushul and Tiera Schroeder shared the team-lead in goals scored with three each, but also got it done for the Chargers in other ways. Neushul recorded three steals, three assists, two field blocks and two drawn ejections. Schroeder added three steals and two assists to her scoring output. Jamie Neushul posted two goals and Ari St. Oegger scored once.

“Those two stole the show,” Parrish said.

Dos Pueblos is 9-0 this season after two wins on Friday. The No. 1 Chargers took out Foothill 12-9 in the earlier semifinal.  Winners of 45 straight overall, DP finished off an undefeated calendar year and hasn’t lost since February of 2009.

That loss happened to be against the Sea Queens, an 8-7 decision at the SoCal Championships.
