Bishop Diego had to deal with a big blow to its team during a 3-3 girls soccer tie against Village Christian at the Grace Brethren Tournament on Thursday.
The Cardinals’ Paige Sleep suffered a knee injury that could sideline her for the rest of the season. Sleep is the team’s captain and center back.
“We’re in an emotional letdown right now,” said coach Brent Gonzalves.
The Cardinals rallied from a 2-1 deficit in the second half. Allison Carr scored off a through pass from Lauren Underwood to tie the score in the 67th minute and Natalie Durtche converted a go-ahead penalty kick two minutes later after Underwood was fouled in the box.
Village Christian managed to tie the score 3-3 off a corner kick in the 70th minute.
Elisa Bernardi gave Bishop a 1-0 lead in the second minute, scoring off a cross from Jordan Price.
The Royals continue tournament play Friday at Laguna Blanca.
