Vaqueros draw WSC rivals in opening round

The men’s and women’s soccer teams of SBCC drew familiar opponents on Tuesday in the opening round of the South Regional state playoffs.

The men will face a WSC rival, Hancock, for the second straight year in a first-round matchup. The Vaquero women, the No. 2 team in the WSC North with a 15-3-2 record, will host third-place Moorpark (12-5-2) on Saturday at 4 p.m.

The Vaquero men, ranked No. 4 in Southern California, will battle Hancock on Saturday at 7 p.m. in the second half of the doubleheader at La Playa Stadium. Santa Barbara (15-2-3), the WSC runner-up, beat the Bulldogs (12-7-2) at home 4-1 and tied them 1-1 last Friday in Santa Maria.

Hancock’s Rosario Bras leads the state in goals with 28.

The Vaquero men are 9-1-1 at home this season. Four WSC teams qualified for the 14-team field.

Last year, SBCC won the WSC crown and then had to travel to conference runner-up Canyons, based on the Southern Cal power rankings. The Cougars won the game 2-1.

The Vaquero women blanked Moorpark 2-0 at home and tied the Raiders 1-1 on the road. SBCC is 7-1-1 at home and has outscored its opponents 79-16 for the season.

Freshman Jessica Domenichelli set a school record with 21 goals in 20 games.
