LOS ANGELES – In the 54th Southern California Intercollegiate Championship at UCLA this past week, Senior Alex Konigsfeldt started the tournament off right with registering a first round win over Janosch Apelt of Azusa Pacific. In the second round, Konigsfeldt posted a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Patrik Kawka of BYU, advancing to the quarterfinals. Earlier in the day, Kawka had defeated No. 2 seed Daniel Kosakowski of UCLA.
In the quarter finals, Konigsfeldt defeated Pepperdines’ Jensen Turner, 7-5, 6-0 to advance to the semi finals. Konigsfeldt’s run later came to an end when he was defeated by No. 4 seed, Jaak Poldma of USC, with a win of 6-3, 6-2.
Banjamin Recknagel had a great start to the Southern California Intercollegiate Championships where he defeated Erik Elliot of UC San Diego in the first round and then bowed out No. 4 seed Peter Lucasson of USC.
Evan Jurgensen, who qualified for the main draw with two wins on Wednesday, was defeated in the first round by Jens Vorkefeld of Denver 7-6, 6-1.
In doubles, Recknagel and Konigsfeldt teamed together and registered a win over Mousheg Hovhannisyan and Jenson Turner of Pepperdine with a 9-8, 8-5 victory. This advanced them to the semi finals. In the semi finals, the Gaucho run came to an end when Recknagel and Konigsfeldt were defeated by Jaak Poldma and JT Sundling of USC, with a victory of 8-3.
Coach Marty Davis states after a great ending to the tournament, “We had a great showing today for the UCSB men.”
UC Santa Barbara will return to action as they finish their fall season next week at home with the UCSB Classic, November 12-14. The Gauchos will be competing every day at 2pm on the Rec Cen courts.
