Sushchikh 5th, Chargers 10th at state cross country

Sergey Sushchikh placed fifth to lead the Dos Pueblos boys to a 10th-place finish in their division at the CIF State Cross Country Championships Saturday at Woodward Park in Fresno.

Sushchikh ran the 5-kilometer course in 15 minutes, 21 seconds — the 24th fastest time overall.

Two-time defending champion Elias Gedyon of Loyola won the Division 2 individual title with a time of 14:52. He becomes only the third runner in history to win three straight championships. The others were Bryan Dameworth of Agoura and Tim Nelson of Liberty Christian.

Parker Schuh of Mountain View finished second in the race in 15:12, Nathaniel Cushing-Murra of Foothiil took third in 15:15 and Will Geiken of Los Gatos was fourth in 15:16.

As a team, DP runners’ total time was 1:21.11. Sophomore Bryan Fernandez finished 42nd in 16:14. He was followed by Max Davis (46, 16:15), Alfred Scott (69, 16:31), Jacob Bartholomew (90, 16:50), Sam Sarmiento (96, 16:54 and sophomore Ben York (17:04).

Loyola, with five runners finishing in the top 25, won the state D-2 team title with 77 points. Saugus, which won the Southern Section title, finished second and Claremont third. The fourth through ninth finishers were Del Campo, Camarillo, Ventura, Ramona, Esperanza and Mt. Carmel.

Connor Reck of Santa Ynez finished 32nd in the Division 4 boys race in 16:31.

In girls competition, freshman Sarah Baxter of Simi Valley blew away the field in the Division race, winning in 16:57. The second place runner, Clare Carroll of Granite Bay, was timed in 17:24.

The Division 1 boys race was the fastest of the day with five runners going under 15 minutes. The winner was Ammar Moussa of Arcadia in 14:43.
