After Nanice Kollee scored SBCC’s first basket on a 3-pointer, Lyndsay Bergus poured in nine straight points during a 14-0 run that put the Vaqueros ahead to stay on Tuesday afternoon in a 68-46 women’s basketball triumph over Bakersfield.
Bergus, a 5-7 sophomore from Simi Valley, finished with 16 points, three rebounds and three steals in the nonconference game at the Sports Pavilion. She hit 7-8 from the charity stripe on a day when the Vaqueros struggled, making just 14-of-29 (48.3 percent).
“We moved Lyndsay to the 1 (point guard) to get everybody going and she got shots within the offense,” said coach Sandrine Krul. “Our defense was good but I’d love to see us talk and move. Our players like to move and not talk.”
Brooke Amenta added 11 points and nine rebounds for Santa Barbara (5-3), which has won four of its last five. The Vaqueros led 33-12 at halftime after Janelle Wong hit a triple with 25 seconds left.
Wong had 10 points and five rebounds. Guard Imelda Bealer contributed seven rebounds, four assists and six steals. SBCC forced 32 turnovers and had 23 steals, including three each by Amenta and Kollee.
Jennifer Thompson’s 13-foot jumper gave the home team its biggest lead (25 points) at 66-41 with 1:40 to play.
SBCC will meet San Jose City on Dec. 2 at 6 p.m. in the first round of the Sequoias Invitational at Visalia.
