Freshman Anthony Petrilli did a little of everything for SBCC in Friday’s 64-62 win over Fullerton in the first round of the Condor Classic men’s basketball tournament at Oxnard.
The 6-foot freshman from Canyon Country had two big defensive rebounds and scored five points down the stretch, including the game-tying 3-pointer that knotted it at 62 with 1:30 to play.
Richard Somdah drove the lane and dished to Josh Guild for a layup with 40 seconds left that put the Vaqueros (2-3) ahead 64-62. Somdah missed a 1-and-1 free throw try and Fullerton missed two shots in the final 12 seconds.
Somdah led the Vaqueros with 18 points while Chris Vines had 11 points, three rebounds and four assists. Petrilli finished with eight points and four rebounds and Guild had six points and five boards.
The Vaqueros overcame a 60-55 deficit with 4:20 to play with a 9-2 game-ending run. Vines started it with a basket and Petrilli followed with a steal and bucket. After the Hornets scored, Petrilli drained his triple to tie the game.
Malik Bradley had seven points for SBCC, which trailed 36-33 at intermission. The Vaqueros hit 44 percent from the field, including 11-25 on 3-pointers.
“We did a better job moving the ball and being more patient,” said coach Morris Hodges. “The guys really dug in defensively down the stretch and made some big stops.”
The Vaqueros advance to the semifinals where they will take on Oxnard at 7 p.m. on Saturday.
